Simple guide to SEO meta tags

Meta tags are special webpage data elements that are embedded within the webpage code to provide information to Search Engines about the subject, topic and content of a specific webpage.

When a search engine crawls the webpage it would use this meta tags to better understand the page and to rank it according to its content.

In a nutshell, they make it easier for search engines to understand the content, rank your page keywords and are therefore vital to your SEO and for increasing your search engine results page (SERP).

The main SEO metadata tag elements are Page Titles, Meta Descriptions, Image ALT’s and Internal linking.

Meta tags are placed in the <head> section of your HTML page, and need to be coded or be added to your CMS (Content Management System). This can be easier or harder depending your CMS. For example WordPress has a dedicated section/fields for adding meta tags like title and meta descriptions. Here is an example of where a website owner would add the meta tags for a specific page .

1. Title tag

2. Meta Description

The meta description is of similar  importance to the title tag. If the title tag is the title that appears at the top of a search result, the meta description is the snippet that is displays as a secondary description in the search results.

The meta description should provide an accurate description of the content of your page. It is usually the element that determines whether users will click, and should match the users search intent. It important to optimize it effectively.

The optimum length for meta descriptions is about  170 characters, however, Google recently displays search results with longer snippets so, it is possible to make them longer.

3. Image ALT text

Image optimization is an important part of  SEO techniques. It adds your website images as search results which increases your overall website search positions. It provides a text alternative to images which will be displayed if the image doesn’t load, or will be read out by a screen reader; it also tells search engines what that image is meant to represent. It is very important to include optimized Keywords in the image alt text.
